Why are you involved in this work (OBey Foundation)? What about your life experiences makes it matter so much to you?
I am involved because I strongly know that this is my calling in life to empower and serve humanity through Obeys' Foundation goals. As an African-American father, grandfather, great grandfather, and now an elder, my experiences have allowed me to be more cognizant of my responsibilities and duties to especially uplift African-Americans, and enlighten humanity overall.

Who or What inspires you?
My grandfather, my parents, my spiritual teachers, and especially my children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

What topics/subjects are you always willing to chat about?
I am always willing to chat and share about my knowledge of universal spirituality and African culture.

Why are you involved in this work (OBey Foundation)? What about your life experiences makes it matter so much to you?
I feel that my purpose in life is to assist in other's healing process, whether it's in the arts, personal wellness, or community development. I have been exposed to great organizations and individuals that have assisted me in my wholistic healing process throughout my years. I want to do the same for others.

When not working on OBey activities, what do you like to do?
African drumming, running, working out, spend time with my family, instrument making, gardening, farming, writing.

Who or What inspires you?
All things in nature. My children and people living their passions inspire me.

Why are you involved in this work (OBey Foundation)? What about your life experiences makes it matter so much to you?
It was always a desire of mine to do something with my family. To make a difference in the world, to leave a legacy with and for my family; and at the same time help the youth and others that need my help.

When not working on OBey activities, what do you like to do?
When I'm not working on OBey activities I like to attend and watch sporting events, exercise, and spend time with family and friends.

What topics/subjects are you always willing to chat about?
Ask me about my favorite sports team, my favorite place in the world I've visited, or anything about OBey Foundation & OBey Youth Care.

John McGil

JOHN MCGILL, III, ESQ- BOARD MEMBER

Why are you involved in this work (OBey Foundation)?

I have always believed that part of my life's responsibility is to contribute to the uplifting of my community and honor the sacrifices toward our progress and liberation from oppression made by our elevated ancestors. I also believe that OBey Foundation is a progressive community organization with a proven track record of dedication to such efforts.

What about your life experiences makes it matter so much to you?

It is a spiritual calling, rooted in my relationship with God and my ancestors.

When not working on OBey activities, what do you like to do?

I am an avid fisherman, both fresh and salt water. Additionally, I am a hand drumming enthusiast, who enjoys percussion, African and Afro-Cuban drumming styles and rhythms.

Who or what inspires you?
Kojo Bey, the members of the OBey Board of Directors, our sponsors and all individuals dedicated toward the uplift of the worlds downtrodden and oppressed peoples.

Why are you involved in this work (OBey Foundation)?

I’m involved in OBey Foundation to help people in my community.

What about your life experiences makes it matter so much to you?

The organization is worldwide, so when my family is about helping the people, youth, and elders, I wanted to be a part of it.

When not working on OBey activities, what do you like to do?

Anything and everything that is needed of me to do or help with.

Why are you involved in this work (OBey Foundation)? What about your life experiences makes it matter so much to you?
I admire what the name of Obey stands for, and the inspiration it brings to mind and have grown to understand through life lessons to stand and obey my commitment to others.
I am a great listener with an open mind, and it is my duty to keep the vision alive and to stay open to all possible, positive outcomes.

Who or What inspires you?
Waking up every morning to a new day looking for the wonderful gifts of the Creator with gratitude.

What topics/subjects are you always willing to chat about?
Any subject that makes one go deeper to living well, why we do what we do on this earth, relationships, intimacy, self worth.

What's something quirky or unique about you?
I love to create new meals for one, frequently skip as part of my exercise routine, and enjoy talking with my plants and watching them thrive.

Why are you involved in this work (OBey Foundation)? What about your life experiences makes it matter so much to you?
I am involved in this work because it is a part of my life's purpose to help others. From leading free drum circles, to offering my time and energy to community development projects,  I have always been actively involved in acts of service to others throughout my life. I have been able to see firsthand how important it is to be there for those who need help, and the lasting impact acts of service leave. 

When not working on OBey activities, what do you like to do?
When not working on Obey activities, some of the things I enjoy doing the most are producing music, spending time with friends and family, working out, & drumming.

Who or What inspires you?
All of life. My inspiration comes from being present in each and every moment, therefore, anything at anytime has the ability to inspire me.
